Stefanie Yuen Thio was quoted in Lianhe Zaobao by Lee Si Miao, in her capacity as chairwoman of SG Her Empowerment (SHE). The article, covering SHE’s Annual Symposium, highlighted how more local cyber bullying victims were seeking help, with online harassment and bullying being most common (p. 5).
Stefanie was quoted saying that the internet is everywhere and while people enjoy the convenience, they also must deal with its accompanying harm. She adds that the survey conducted by SHE shows that people do not know much about the dangers of using the internet, and even if they do, they may be accustomed to it. Hence, they do not take action when they are suffering, which worries her.
The New Zealand Cybersecurity Organisation receives 28,000 reports of cyber threats annually. In comparison, Stefanie believes that most Singapore cyber bullying victims still go unreported. The actual number of cases is believed to be as high as tens of thousands each year, including students aged 18 and below.
Stefanie emphasised that to deal with online dangers, we cannot solely rely on law enforcement and that we must adopt age-appropriate measures to target victims of different age groups. This is especially since so many primary school children have mobile devices, they must also be taught the importance of cybersecurity in the right environment.
