Stefanie Yuen Thio had 38 media appearances last week, regarding the Law Society saga involving its vice-president Mr Chia Boon Teck. Mr Chia had posted on LinkedIn his personal comments about the case of Lev Panfilov, who had been found guilty of the rape of a 30-year-old woman. He questioned the outcome of the case and listed 10 points which queried the victim’s testimony and conduct.
Mr Chia’s comments were called out by Stefanie for being victim-shaming. She publicly sought an explanation from Mr Chia, saying that failing that, he should step down as an office-bearer at Law Society as his views were contrary to the legal fraternity’s.
Stefanie’s post went viral. It led to coverage from major media outlets, prompted similar calls by other legal luminaries on LinkedIn for Mr Chia to step down, and Minister for Law, K Shanmugam, writing a post on Facebook to clarify that Singapore’s laws were “moving in quite the opposite direction” from Mr Chia’s views.
Mr Chia stepped down from Law Society on 26 March, 2025 and has since deleted his LinkedIn account.
