TSMP celebrates its 10th Anniversary
TSMP is proud to be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, we are organizing and sponsoring a charity dinner in aid of Operation Smile Singapore to be held on 24 July 2008.
The firm was set up in 1998 as Thio Su Mien & Partners, named after our Senior Executive Partner Dr Thio Su Mien. Dr Thio was a senior partner in a large law firm prior to founding Thio Su Mien & Partners together with Tan Bee Lian, Thio Shen Yi and Stefanie Yuen Thio. Dr Thio was also the first female Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Singapore.
With a compact team comprising 7 lawyers in our early days, our first office was located at Caltex House. As the firm expanded, we moved to our current premises at Six Battery Road in late 2000. The firm was subsequently corporatised as TSMP Law Corporation on 1 August 2001.
We have over the years grown our practice as well as our numbers. We now boast a team of 35 lawyers and an equal number of support and administrative staff, bringing our total headcount to about 70. Our lawyers have been recognized as leading professionals in their respective areas of specialization and received numerous accolades, having been named in legal journals such as Asialaw Profiles, Asialaw Leading Lawyers, the Asia Pacific Legal 500, Chambers Global, Chambers Asia, IFLR 1000, the International Who's Who of Construction Lawyers and the Euromoney Guide to the World's Leading Shipping & Maritime Lawyers. Our firm has been ranked in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 and Asialaw Profiles for various practice areas. Our litigation team has been consistently rated as one of the major dispute resolution and arbitration practices by the Asia Pacific Legal 500 and Asialaw Profiles, and was described as being one of the top two construction litigation teams in Singapore in Asialaw Profiles 2007.
In January 2006, TSMP incorporated into its practice the boutique construction law practice of ChanTan LLC. The merger brought on board the construction law expertise of Raymond Chan and George Tan.
In January 2007, Tan Cheng Han SC, Dean of the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore, joined the firm as a Consultant.
TSMP entered into a joint law venture with Australian-based international law firm Allens Arthur Robinson on 1 June 2007, forming Allens Arthur Robinson TSMP. With the establishment of the joint law venture, our clients now have access to a legal team of more than 1,100 legal professionals in the Asia Pacific to see to their international legal needs.
In January 2008, Joint Managing Director Thio Shen Yi was appointed Senior Counsel at the opening of the legal year. This much-anticipated and well-deserved appointment coincides with the celebration of the firm's 10th anniversary.
We as a firm have much to be thankful for. This is why we have decided to celebrate our 10th Anniversary with a difference. "Sharks with a Heart", which is what the charity event to be held on 24 July 2008 has been named, promises to be a fun evening of fine-dining with clients and friends in "hip black tie" and our lawyers serving food and wine in uniforms and aprons. A charity auction will be included as part of the evening's programme with Thio Shen Yi SC doubling up as auctioneer. All proceeds from dinner ticket prices will go directly to Operation Smile Singapore.

NEWS RELEASE: 24 March 2008
"TSMP LAW CORPORATION CREATES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LAW STUDIES
Prominent Local Law Firm Donates 2 Scholarships To NUS Faculty of Law
Singapore, 24 March 2008 - TSMP Law Corporation announced today that the firm will be establishing 2 scholarships for students studying law at the National University of Singapore's preeminent law faculty. The firm will be providing 2 scholarships per year - one for the best all-round law student about to commence his/her second year and another for the best all-round law student starting his/her third year of academic studies. Each scholarship is worth S$5,000, and TSMP Law Corporation has made an initial pledge of S$50,000 to fund 10 scholarships for the first 5 years.
According to Mrs Stefanie Yuen Thio, Joint Managing Director at TSMP Law Corporation, ‘Our primary motivation for these scholarships is to encourage promising law students to join the profession. That's why the scholarships are for the best all-round students - we hope to nurture not just the most academically capable but also those who have the character and motivation to become top lawyers. You could say we are looking for both "hardware" and "heartware".
"I am very pleased that TSMP Law Corporation is considering establishing 2 scholarships at the NUS Faculty of Law to assist and nurture promising future members of the legal profession. The policy at the NUS law school is that no student should feel deprived of a place because of financial reasons. Thanks to the assistance of socially responsible law practices such as TSMP Law Corporation, we have been able to provide financial aid to some of our students.", says Professor Tan Cheng Han SC, Dean of NUS Faculty of Law.
Recipients of the scholarships will be entitled to an internship program of at least 2 weeks at TSMP Law Corporation, and a further 2 weeks at TSMP's joint law venture firm, Allens Arthur Robinson TSMP, during his/her academic vacations. This will give the scholars exposure to legal practice not just in a Singapore firm but also in an international firm. They will also be encouraged to seek pupilage with the firm upon graduating from the LLB program.
"We are aiming to foster the recipient's interest in the practice of law, and hopefully he or she will feel that our firm would be a great place to start (and continue) his/her legal career. That said, there are no strings attached to this scholarship. As a firm, we want the best candidates to join us, and to want to stay with us because they believe that this is the best place for them. Our recruitment policy is to hire future partners, not just junior practitioners", adds Mrs Yuen Thio.

TSMP Charity Event 2007 for the Children's Cancer Foundation - "Disney Live! Mickey's Magic Show", 23 November 2007
We were pleased to have had the opportunity once again to organise a year-end event for the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF). In the afternoon on 23 November 2007, we greeted some 100 children and their families together with CCF volunteers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, where they were taken to see "Disney Live! Mickey's Magic Show". After the show, a buffet lunch awaited them at the function room of the Indoor Stadium. This was followed by a game of Scavenger Hunt, which generated much excitement and many laughs for everyone, as it saw enthusiastic children (and adults) from each of the teams scrambling about collecting objects such as pocket tissue paper, pens and earrings; and tripping over themselves as they removed belts, socks and shoes and throwing them into cardboard boxes to present to the Game Master and Mistress. As it turned out, there were prizes for everyone in the end. We trust the children enjoyed themselves as much as we did!

Weekend Round-Up for 5-7 October 2007 (by Ian Lim)
Following on from Daniel Allender's sensational triumph in last Saturday's Law Society Cross Country Run, the Allens Arthur Robinson TSMP team won the Law Society Trivia Quiz at Penny Black on Friday, 5 October 2007.
Nine teams took part in what was the 3rd edition of the Quiz. Our team, which stood in second position at the break and romped home to win by a healthy margin, comprised the following illustrious individuals (in alphabetical order): Andrew Emslie, Brooke Griffin, Brooke Nicholls, Lee, Ian Lim, James Chan, Justin Koh, Melvin Chan, Robert Fish, Ronald Ang and Wayne Lee.
Everyone in the team contributed multiple answers to the cause in our victory. If there was any particularly outstanding team member, it was probably Justin, who was full of answers for questions like: “What's the shortest war in recorded history at 45 minutes?” (Answer: The Anglo-Zanzibar War), and “Who are Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde?” (Answer: The ghosts in Pacman).
Our prizes were a bottle of champagne, Penny Black vouchers (set off against our prodigious consumption for the night) and a trophy. Well done all!
On Sunday 7 October 2007, Allens Arthur Robinson TSMP also took part in our first Law Futsal Tournament. In fact, we were one of only 2 law firms that participated. The other participants were multiple teams from NUS Law School, PLC (the Bar Course) and Temasek Polytechnic. It's a good bet that we fielded what was by far the oldest team in the competition, which comprised the following valiant individuals (again in alphabetical order; not age!): Andrew Emslie, Galvin Tan, Ian Lim, Jonathan Oon, Melvin Chan and Wayne Lee.
Many thanks to Daniel Allender, who, notwithstanding his incapacitating neck/back injury that prevented him from playing, came down to serve as technical advisor, photographer, refreshments provider and general cheering section. Our highlights were Andrew's amazing bottom right corner goal from the halfway line, Andrew's astounding goal from an acute angle volley, and Galvin's superlative goal where he beat 2 defenders and slotted from an acute angle. Marvellous goals all. Unfortunately they were also our only goals of the day. Our participation therefore ended with the group stages.
Oh well, there's always next year, after all, we only won the Trivia Quiz on our 3rd try!
