Benjamin Choo looks more like a professional rugby player than a man with a criminal past, but he brings both a mean rugby tackle and his record in crime (comprising 2½ years of litigation practice in white-collar criminal work) to TSMP's corporate team. Prior to that, he had started his career in the financial services department of a large Singapore law firm.
His diverse experience has given Ben a broad view of the law; his banking and finance background providing a detailed grasp of financial transactions, and his time in a specialist criminal litigation firm (where his experience included defending one of the largest bank fraud cases in Singapore) instilling a deep respect for corporate governance and accountability.
Since he started serving time in TSMP, he has been involved in a number of corporate transactions, ranging from IPOs and share acquisition financing, to cross-border mergers & acquisitions. His portfolio of files also includes advising listed clients on regulatory and compliance issues.
Some of Ben's recent projects are:-
• acting for the issue manager in the IPO of a chemical production company based in China;
• a RMB 100 million investment into an oil terminal and refinery in China;
• acting for a listed company on major acquisitions with an aggregate value of over S$30 million;
• advising a local company listed on NASDAQ on compliance requirements of the law of its home country; and
• rights issue cum special dividend for locally listed Low Keng Huat (Singapore) Limited.
A firm believer in a balanced life, and recently a first-time father, Ben is also a devoted family man. There have, however, been occasional sightings of a man looking remarkably like Ben reported at the Irish Pub, just a stone’s throw from the office, but Ben denies that he’s been trading diaper duty to buddy up to a Budweiser. That may be the privilege against self-incrimination coming into play!
